Extra-Corporeal Shock Wave

APPOINTMENT

ESWT is a technology that has been around for more than 10 years. It originated in human medicine as a treatment to shatter kidney stones. In veterinary medicine, it is now being used to treat orthopedic, neurologic, and soft tissue injuries.

“Extracorporeal” means that the treatment is conducted outside the body and is non-invasive. “Shockwave” describes the rapid pressure in which the waves are delivered and does NOT refer to an electrical shock.

The shock waves or pulses are high energy sound waves that increase circulation and stimulate the growth of new cells. In turn, inflammation and swelling is reduced, blood flow is increased, wound healing is enhanced, and bones start to heal and form. The body is using its own system to heal itself, ESWT is just helping to speed up the process.

ESWT is Different from LASER Therapy

  • ESWT uses sound energy, whereas laser uses light energy.
  • Shock waves can penetrate deeper than laser energy.
  • Results can usually be seen with fewer ESWT treatments (1–3) due to the depth of sound penetration than with laser therapy (10–15 treatments).
